Medical treatment and education in Madagascar (July 2011)

Project description:

Medical care in Madagascar

The island nation of Madagascar is located off the southeastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean and has just over 22 million inhabitants. Because the infrastructure is poor and there are too few hospitals, only just under a third of the population has direct basic medical care. Only 60-70% have access to hospitals for basic medical care, and the rest must walk 10 km or more to reach these locations.

The D.R.O.P.S. team, led by dentist Dr. Y. D. Ons, visited particularly remote areas of the island in July 2011 and treated numerous patients of all ages free of charge. Information on daily hygiene and preventive health care was again an important part of the intensive program. Thus, the patients were able to leave the treatment center not only with a treatment, but also with the knowledge that goes with it.

“There's no exercise better for the heart other than reaching down and lifting people up.”

Our thanks go to all the volunteers involved, the Dubai Korean Church and especially to Dr. Yunson Denise On and her dental team. We thank you all for giving your skills, knowledge, time and money to make this mission a reality. Without the dedication of these volunteers and numerous fellow volunteers in the field, the continued support and follow-up care of the patients would not be possible.
